Halloween and Horror Movies

16x20 oils on wood

A new painting progress shot for Ryan Shuckhart’s Beyond the Grave 2nd annual art show.  I had a few ideas for this event, but this is the one I chose to execute first (I may change my mind and end up doing something else if time permits). Its a horror movie themed event, and I picked a very obscure movie to illustrate, but hopefully it will become more recognizable as it progresses.

Show details:

  • Theme: Artwork inspired by Horror Films
  • Location: The Highlander • 931 Monroe Drive • Atlanta, Georgia 30308
  • Date: November 13, 2010

Ophelia Sneak Peek Part 3

Ophelia 16x20 oil on wood

This will probably be my last update on this painting before its completed.  I think I want to add a few more foreground plants, and maybe an overall detail pass.  I noticed that the finish seemed slightly uneven, as some areas have more shine than others (probably due to the linseed oil).  After some research and recommendations, I purchased an alkyd solution to glaze the painting before I add the final paint pass.  The specific brand is  Grumbascher Alkyd painting medium.  The shine is evening out, but Its been 3 days and the painting still feels like petroleum on the surface!  Is anyone out there familiar with this product?  I’m unsure if I should try using a heat lamp on it or not.

While I’m waiting for this to dry I actually started another painting, which I will be posting updates of soon!

Its taking forever, but here is my second progression shot! I changed the pose to work with the circular composition better, and have been detailing the lilies birds, and grass.

I’ve learned a lot about oils so far… Mainly, thinning paint with linseed oil does not make it dry faster. I’m hoping to finish this up soon, so that it will be mostly dry for December.
