I was at Dick Blick a few weeks ago to pick up some new supplies (yay!), when I noticed they were having a sale on oil paints. I normally use Winsor & Newton and Grumbacher, which I absolutely love, but decided that this would be a good opportunity to try something new. Blick brand oil paints seemed like an interesting new choice, and were very reasonably priced. I bought 6 colors, Indian Yellow, Burnt Umber, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White, and Turquoise Light, along with a new medium from Daler-Rowney (I usually use Grumbascher painting medium III, but the smell is very strong).

For my new painting, “Distant Musings”, I exclusively used these items so I could get a good idea of how they work as a whole.

Initially, I had problems with two of the colors oil and pigment consistency. When squeezing the paint onto a palette, I noticed that the pigment of the paint separated from the oil in the Burnt Umber. The other colors did not have this problem. The French Ultramarine Blue did not seem to have enough oil, however, and was very thick (since I had leftover oil on my palette from the Burnt Umber, I used it to soften the Blue).

The colors themselves were vibrant and rich. The paints as a whole seemed to dry much more quickly than other oils, and had an even smooth satin finish. When paired with the Daler-Rowney medium, glazes of varying transparency were easily achieved. I did notice that this medium seemed to dry much more quickly than Grumbacher’s, and had more of a gelly-like texture. The smell was not as strong, however, which is definitely a plus. Overall, however, I think I prefer Grumbacher’s medium to Daler-Rowney.

Despite the problems with the consistency of the Burt Umber and French Ultramarine Blue, I found these paints to be a good value. The even finish is something I seem to never get when painting with oils, and was a pleasant surprise.

PROS:
-fast dry time
-smooth consistent satin finish
-vibrant hues
-good value

CONS:
-pigment separated from oil in Burnt Umber
-French Ultramarine Blue was too thick
-limited palette selection (this may be a problem for some, but I prefer to use a restricted palette)

Welcome to my new and improved website!  The old was was getting pretty bogged down, so I decided to just redo the whole thing.

Whats new?

- I have arranged the galleries by year

- Images now display larger

- Each piece of work has its own page, so I can include more information such as sketched and detail close up images
